Project(s) - applied EBA
The initial response to the impacts of climate change in the Caribbean by the Conservancy has focused on adaptation rather than mitigation, with a realization that mitigation is needed for any adaptation solution to work. The type of nature based climate change adaptation work we implement can be termed "ecosystem based adaptation" or EBA. Specifically, we have focused on coastal EBA. No matter what this work is termed, it should play a critical part of any climate change adaptation strategy. This work mobilizes multiple sectors to support the protection, maintenance and restoration of natural ecosystems so that the scale and scope of impacts to human communities and to the natural systems on which they depend is reduced. Key dimensions of EBA include supporting adaptive capacity and the design and implementation of adaptive action. Both involve the direct or indirect use of nature’s infrastructure, whether wetlands, coral reefs, beaches, mangroves or other forests, combined with the human infrastructure and socio-economic needs, with sustainable development always as the ultimate goal.
