Why it Matters: The Michigamme Highlands region north to the Keweenaw Peninsula features some of the most scenic landscape in Michigan and is highly valued for its recreational value and ecological significance. This area contains vast and wild forested landscapes interspersed with rare features such as granitic balds and volcanic shorelines. We work with local communities to encourage low impact recreational use across these landscapes.
Strategies:
- Protect the wild, intact landscape across the Michigamme Highlands and Keweenaw Peninsula in order to maintain and restore the area’s high quality ecological systems, restore and maintain target species.
- Assist local land trusts to identify, and protect key areas.
- Manage forests by defining desired future conditions and managing towards those objectives on Conservancy lands, as well as collecting data on forest management practices.
- Expand community outreach to engage residents in our restoration activities and
provide recreational access where appropriate. We will also export our lessons learned on forestry using Key Ecological Attributes (KEA’s).
