The original purchase of 23,338 acres in the Two-Hearted watershed is part of a larger project called the Northern Great Lakes Forest Project, the largest single land protection project in state history and one of the largest projects in The Nature Conservancy’s 54-year history. By adopting an innovative "working lands" approach to conservation, this project provides the people of Michigan with the permanent protection of some of our state’s most treasured landscapes, and protects thousands of timber and tourism jobs in the area. The Conservancy is working with partners to protect four core biodiversity areas and strives to protect the remaining priority areas remaining in the watershed.
