Innovations in Restoration Science
Restoring native sagebrush-steppe vegetation is hard. The climate is harsh and unpredictable. The landscape is vast and remote. And invasive annual grasses promote frequent wildfires, ousting native plants in their wake.
TNC is collaborating with the USDA Agricultural Research Service and other partners to create innovative seed technologies and geospatial planning tools to improve success under these trying conditions. By deliberately choosing where, when and how native seeds are planted, we can maximize the odds that restoration efforts will succeed.
Precision Restoration begins with ecology. We research barriers to germination and seedling establishment and then design technologies to address those barriers. Over the past six years, we have assisted partners in testing many different seed technologies in lab and small field trials. Now, we are scaling-up the most promising seed technologies to larger field trials and demonstrations. We will test across wider geographies to understand the best application of successful technologies.
