Threatened and Endangered
The Boardman Conservation Area protects over 23,000 acres of imperiled shrub-stepped habitat in the Columbia Basin Ecoregion. The property is home to several species considered rare or threatened including the Washington ground squirrel, a listed species under the Oregon Endangered Species Act. TNC regularly surveys ground squirrel populations using novel monitoring techniques including scent dogs to find these elusive animals (Watch a video here). TNC also monitors populations of sensitive bird species, including
sagebrush sparrows,
ferruginous hawks, and
loggerhead shrikes, all of which are dependent on shrub-steppe ecosystems in Oregon and are increasingly rare in the Columbia Basin Ecoregion. Monitoring reports are available for each of these species.
