Latest On The Conservation Gateway

A well-managed and operational Conservation Gateway is in our future! Marketing, Conservation, and Science have partnered on a plan to rebuild the Gateway into the organization’s enterprise content management system (AEM), with a planned launch of a minimal viable product in early FY26. As indicated by Communications Research, thinking about the benefits nature provides to people resonates with people, but there are likely conditions that make such an approaches more or less effective and efficient.  We have compiled some information to help make this easier including a tool outlining potential enabling conditions (Screening tool), a database of technical tools that can map and model service flows (Toolbox), and a list of sources/websites to look for possible funding opportunities for ecosystem services projects.

Screening Tool
An ecosystem services approach seeks to integrate ecosystem services into decision-making by (a) using scientific assessment tools to understand people’s dependence and impact on the services provided by ecosystems and (b) applying policy mechanisms that incorporate ecosystem service values into the decisions made by governments, businesses, NGOs and individuals.  However, an ecosystem services approach may not always be the best way to achieve conservation. Success depends on an enabling context and effective project design. It is therefore critical to screen an ecosystem services approach early on. Screening can help to evaluate key strengths, weaknesses and information gaps.  In collaboration with the Natural Capital Project, TNC developed a set of screening criteria in this screening tool with a companion product providing definitions on the screening tool's criteria

Database of Tools
Available now (current as of 2008) is a Microsoft Access database that describes dozens of tools that can be used to assess, map and / or value ecosystem services within an area of interest. For each tool, the database provides information such as which ecosystem services it includes, whether or not the tool is spatial, types of data needs, and links to find out more information.
