The South Central FLN has long been a
catalyst for restoration, across the state of Arkansas and beyond. The network
is a long-term, diverse coalition functioning as a robust community of practice
of restoration practitioners, scientists, policy makers and on-the-ground
managers. Together, they are restoring and managing lands with prescribed fire
and timber management techniques for the long-term health of the lands for wildlife and
water quality benefits.
Key projects right now include two Collaborative Forest Landscape
Restoration Program (CFLRP) projects (together totaling over 1 million acres)
and the 80,000-acre Happy Bat Project on the Sylamore Ranger District of the
Ozark-St. Francis National Forest. In addition to this on-the-ground work, the
region is the epicenter of the shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) range, and the FLN has been chosen to lead the Shortleaf Pine Initiative to address the steep decline of this species and its
associated fire-adapted communities.
