Ecoregion-based Conservation in the Central Shortgrass Prairie

This document represents the beginning of the Central Shortgrass Prairie Ecoregion-based Conservation Plan. The goal of the plan is to identify a portfolio of sites and strategies to protect all the species and natural communities representative of the ecoregion. To do so, the Plan calls for the conservation of approximately 20,400 square miles (22%) of the total area of the ecoregion and the implementation of a wide spectrum of strategies. The area is threatened by disturbance regimes (e.g., grazing, fire), agricultural conversion, residential development, water pollution and groundwater withdrawal.
