This article examines the results and process of The Nature Conservancy's partnership with the US Army Corps of Engineers to alter the operation of dams in a way that will be more beneficial to freshwater ecosystem health and function without compromising the human uses (e.g., power generation, recreation) for which the dams were created. Te sites examined are the Green River (Kentucky), Savannah River (Georgia), Big Cyprus Creek (Texas), Bill Williams River (Arizona), and Middle Fork Willamette River (Oregon). Key conclusions highlight good short- and long-term ecological indicators as well as those for assessing the function of the partnership.
