This document presents the results of a workshop organized by the UK-based Poverty and Conservation Working Group in July 2007 and promoted by Fauna and Flora International, Birdlife International and the African Wildlife Foundation. The workshop focused on challenges and needs for socio-economic livelihoods measures and assessments. The objective was to “identify pragmatic recommendations and guidelines for conservation practitioners, that balance technical rigour with field realities.” The workshop intended to build capacities of organizations involved in related field work, improve measure and evaluation skills and expertise, and enhance institutional culture of learning and linking with development organizations' knowledge and experiences. The most notable effort is the set of conclusions (divided into six sections) that focused not only on recommended orientations for field practitioners but also on issues related to organizational process.
