Developed in 1996 in order to ensure that conservation actions would not contribute to erode indigenous peoples' rights, the WWF Position Paper and Statement of Principles focuses on indigenous peoples and conservation and includes a) a description of basic indigenous rights, b) an acknowledgement of the Rights and Interests of Indigenous Peoples, c) a description of WWF conservation objectives, and d) WWF's Principles of Partnerships with Indigenous Peoples which govern all of the organization’s conservation activities within indigenous peoples' lands and territories. A key point on the position paper is that collaboration depends on the recognition of peoples' rights and interests, appreciation for their contributions to biodiversity conservation, and understanding the links between biological and cultural diversity.
