One out of eight people in Latin America have no access to clean drinking water. This is the equivalent of more than 77 million people. The inadequate management of our watersheds together with the effects of climate change generates great economic, social and environmental impacts to humans and nature.
The Nature Conservancy, Fundación FEMSA, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Global Environment Fund (FMAM-GEF), through the Latin America Water Funds Partnership, have created a complete manual that compiles The Nature Conservancy and local partners’ experiences in the creation of this conservation tool: Water Funds: Conserving Green Infrastructure. A Guide for Design, Creation and Operation.
The manual is a methodological guide for those wanting to know more about water funds or evaluate and implement conservation actions for natural ecosystems. It is also a fundamental tool for making investment decisions in this field. The publication presents some cases such as the National Water Fund in Quito-Ecuador – FONAG – and the Water for Life and Sustainability in the Cauca Valley in Colombia, among others.
