This animation shows the concept behind one of our most promising seed technologies: time-delay coatings. By applying these coatings to seeds, we can delay their germination until after the most volatile freeze-thaw cycles of winter have passed. If we mix different strenght coatings together, we can hedge our bets against the unknowns of weather. Hopefully at least one coating will time seeds to germinate in the sweet spot: early enough to get a head start on the competition, but late enough to avoid a killing frost.
